Catwalk adds over $100,000 in much-needed funds each year for our village schools;
Many of the computers that your students use each day were funded by the Catwalk;
Catwalk is coordinated each year by the efforts of many dedicated parent-volunteers;
Volunteering for Catwalk is FUN and satisfying and there is a job for every parent’s schedule or skills!

Monthly planning meetings are typically held on the 2nd Wednesday of the month at HTHI. As Catwalk quickly approaches, additional meetings and work parties (painting, invitations, baskets) will be planned.

Upcoming Recyling Fundraiser Event

High Tech High Villages will be hosting a recycling event in the Liberty Station ACE Hardware Parking Lot on Jan. 28-29, 2012.

Our recycler -- High-Tech Recycling -- is providing all of the manpower (and cleanup) for the event.

In addition to electronic items, this year High Tech Recycling will also be taking appliances, which is great since the city dump charges a disposal fee for these items.

Secure document destruction might also be offered for a nominal fee (Goodwill charges $5 for a bankers box size). Note, however, that this has not yet been confirmed.

Signs will be posted on Rosecrans Street a few days before the event, and ACE Hardware will be sending out an email to their customer list, as well as offering a flyer with discounts at the store for recycling participants.

Please participate in this event. It's a great opportunity for you to properly dispose of old electronic equipment and appliances, and to raise money for the school.

· 98% of our students go on to college. Last year, these institutions included Stanford, Duke, MIT, Columbia, Johns Hopkins, Swarthmore, and all 10 campuses of the University of California.
· Nationally recognized as model schools and as leaders in education reform.
· Innovative project based learning, smaller than traditional class sizes, academic coaching, one on one college counseling, meaningful technological literacy in every discipline.

THE PROBLEM: The amount we receive from the state to educate each child (ADA*) has fallen drastically in the past 4 years, while the cost to educate your child has stayed the same. (And includes: salaries frozen for 4 years, staff reductions, limited professional development, etc.) In addition, a 4% mid year cut is expected.
*ADA (Average Daily Attendance) – this refers to the amount of money the school receives each year for each student with perfect attendance. Student absence reduces this total by approximately $37 per day/occurrence, per child.
In addition, Prop 98 does not guarantee this amount. It only guarantees a share of the revenue. When revenues decline, our share declines. The perfect storm occurs when both the state revenues decline and local property taxes decline, in addition to the ever increasing payment deferrals made by the state.

Food Sale Deposits

HTH – HTHI – HTM

Thank you for helping to coordinate the food sales for your team or group. The procedure to follow for handling food sale money is as follows:

Immediately after your food sale the money will need to be counted and placed in a sealed manila envelope with the school, team or group name and date clearly marked on the envelope.
After you have counted the money, fill out a receipt*. There is a receipt book at the front desk of every school (you must only use the receipt book for the particular school you are selling for.)
Enclose the receipt with the cash inside the envelope.

Note: Please make sure the receipt book and envelopes are available before you start your food sale, since the reception person at your school may not be there when you are done to give it to you, or show you where it is.
* Money raised for a group that does not have a school WAMU account (usually teaching teams only) it is the responsibility of the selling individual or group (such as immersion trip fundraisers, senior projects, etc. to deposit the money into their accounts – check with teacher in charge on how they want to do this.) You do not fill out a receipt unless it is to be deposited into a school (WAMU) account.
Please leave the sealed and labeled envelope with Accounting, or if they are already gone, with your own school’s front desk person (make sure they know there is cash inside – to safely keep it locked in a cabinet until it can be delivered to accounting or deposited elsewhere. The accounting person usually leaves by 4:30 pm. The office is in HTM (to the left of, and behind front desk).

Food Sale Information

HTH – HTHI – HTM

Schedule ALL food sales for HTH, HTM and HTHI with Darcy Ripley, at: daviddarcy@earthlink.net There are plenty of dates for everyone. You can check available dates on the HTH village calendar – go to your school webpage and click on the Quick Navigation box in the upper right hand corner and then click Calendars for a combined village calendar. Look for food sales from HTH, HTM or HTHI only. The Media Arts schools hold theirs on the other side of the street, so you can hold one at the same time.
The Location in between HTH and HTM is better for business, it has more student traffic.
Set up at around 3:00 to best take advantage of all the schools exit times. It should be completed by around 4:00. Only one hour and you can earn a good deal of funds.
Pick up a cash box from your front desk person, as well ask to have the receipt book and a manila envelope available afterwards for depositing the money. The front desk person may be gone by the time you are finished with the sale. Click here for Food Sale Deposit Information.
Pizza and sodas are always the biggest sellers.
Volare Pizza has a good deal for a huge pizza that they will cut into around 30 slices that only cost about $15.00 (let them know you are from High Tech). You can sell them for $1.00 a slice. Volare is located at 3528 Barnett Ave, (619) 224-0030. If you call ahead, Volare will deliver, but then you must tip them. (5 or 6 pizzas will usually sell – with 3-4 pepperoni and 2-3 cheese.)
Another good deal is Little Caesars large cheese or pepperoni pizza for $5.00, if you ask ahead of time they will cut the pizza into 10 slices again to sell at $1.00 a slice. Parents have sold as many as 20 pizzas, which is 200 slices for one bake sale.
Try to sell everything for $1.00, not dealing with change is simple and fast. If you have smaller items, such as small cookies, bundle them into $1 baggies.
Coke and 7up or Sprite are the beverages that sell best.
It is best to have about $20.00 dollars in change ($1s). If you don’t remember change, don’t panic, if the kids want to buy something they can usually find the change, and after a few minutes selling you will have change enough to make it. A few might h have to wait.
Ask the students to help! It is for their class that we’re raising the money. You should just be the supervisor – the students should do the selling. Check with their teachers ahead of time and they’ll usually let some kids out early to help set up and sell.
Don’t forget disposable plastic gloves, or at least paper towels and/or napkins for serving. Remind kids not to handle the food with their bare hands and for the “cashier” to not handle food.
Turn in money to Accounting (located behind the front desk at HTM) in a sealed envelope with the total $ amount, school and teaching team or group listed on the outside. If this is a fundraiser for a group that does not have a school WAMU (teaching team) account, your group is responsible for collecting the money, it does not go to accounting. Volunteers are still needed

This year HTH Village will be providing parent volunteer workers for a large concession booth at PETCO Park for ten Padres home games to raise funds for HTH Village Schools. All food will be provided and prepared by the vendor for PETCO Park; we'll just serve food and drinks. This is a fast-paced, fun opportunity for parents who have a chunk of time to contribute for two or more home games during the 2008 season. Volunteers must be 18 and up to serve food - must be 21 and up to serve drinks.

We're looking for 40 25 more parent volunteers, family members or friends able to commitment to:

- 2 to 10 games between March and September
- Help staff HTHV concession stand at PETCO Park

Funds we raise help support HTHV senior year projects/activities and other projects/activities that benefit all HTHV students.

Unlike traditional schools, HTH Village School families live in different parts of the county. To encourage community spirit, each of the Parent Associations are helping parents get together near where they live. We call these events Zip Code Socials! Socials can be a dinner party, late afternoon get togethers or a brunch! What ever the pleasure of the host and hostess. These events are planned as potlucks so anything goes! As events are planned invitations are primarily sent via email. Events are also included in email blasts and posted on the various PA websites.

More Information for Potential Hostesses

Thanks for considering to host a zip code social!

You'll need to pick a date and location, and make an electronic flyer/invitation. An email will be sent out to all parents in your zip code(s) that have given email addresses, and if there is time you will be given mailing labels for the families living in your zip codes. Hostesses also receive a list of all potential attendees. You can see previous invitations/flyers on the web at http://parentpage.org/a/village. Click on (HTH Village Archive) then (06-07) and scroll down. Once you have decided on a date and invitation:

Send an email so the labels can be printed (allow a week to receive them). At least 3 weeks ahead of the event - most hostesses will not be doing this.

Please send an editable copy of your invitation to myssiemccann@cox.net for posting to the website. (It needs to be editable so the words can be sent in the body of an email.) If there is a version with graphics (.jpg or .pdf for example), that is welcomed and will be posted on the website. (You should have one version with your address and one without.)

The wording for the emails needs to include:

A. Who is invited (zip code and participates - some socials are only for parents, some include kids - your choice)

B. What the event is (potluck, catered, BBQ, etc.)

C. Where the event will be (address, zip)

D. When (date, start and end time)

E. Who the event is hosted by (including phone and email)

F. And any other necessary information (what people should bring, what to wear, directions to the event, etc.)

We plan to do two different kinds of email announcements: targeted just for your families, and a general announcement to all parents. If you do not want your address included in the general announcements then please either send us two sets of words or note clearly your wishes.

Targeted:

One email will be sent when your zip code social announcement is received by us.

A second email will be sent a day or so after your invitations are mailed (let us know when this is done). The second email will include a link to the online form.

If there is time, a third email will be sent a day or so before the event. (You may need to remind us to do this.)

General:

Notices will hopefully also be included in each schools' email blasts.

If it's okay with you, the web version will include your email and phone. If not, then I will be listed as the contact person and will forward website replies to you. You need to let us know if you do not want it posted publicly.

You may* be reimbursed for stamps and printing (within reason), as well as plates, cups, napkins, and plasticware. Please keep your receipts and submit them to me. * Decision regarding this has not been voted on by the President's Council.

Communication is essential in creating a connection between your home and your child’s school.

There are two systems set up to gather changes in parent contact information.

The email lists are maintained by a parent volunteer. When you get a new email address, please follow the directions found at the side of this screen under REFERENCE - Parent Email List Information. The directions include information on verifying you are on an email list, subscribing, removing your email from a list, etc.
Everything else is maintained by the schools' Student Information System Coordinator, Joanna Clark. Changes in names, addresses, phones and emails need to be sent to Joanna Clark jclark@hightechhigh.org

High Tech High Village Email Lists

Click here for Parent Email List Information including: what to do if you have not received an email from the school within three weeks of the start of school, how to put your email address on a parent distribution email list, how to remove your email from a parent distribution email list, and how to read emails you may have missed.

School Directory

A Directory of student and parent contact information will be provided to all HTH Village families, based on the contact information you provided for registration. This contact information is extremely helpful to students to contact each other for school projects and for parent volunteers to contact team parents. Contact info includes student and parent names, home and cell phone#’s, home and email addresses, and team listings.

PLEASE NOTE: Each student’s contact information will automatically be included in the directory. If you do not wish your contact information to be listed, it is up to YOU to notify the school within the first two weeks. To do so, contact Joanna Clark at jclark@hightechhigh.org or 619-243-5015.

Websites

The portal to all the school websites is http://hightechhigh.org. The portal to all the Parent Association websites is at http://parentpage.org. There is a link to the portal for the Parent Association websites at the bottom of most of the school webpages and there is a link to the school websites at the side of most of the Parent Association webpages.

Calendars

The schools and the Parent Association use the same online calendar to post information about events - the link to the calendar is visible from both the school and the PA webpages. The links below go directly to the calendar for the noted school.

Note: If you would like to see the events for two schools at the same time, simply scroll down so you see the section called School Calendars (lower left of each calendar). Click so there is a green dot by both schools.

Mailings (U.S. Post)

Occasionally the school or the Parent Association will mail information to parents. The database with addresses is maintained by the school.

The Parent Association expects to send invitations to Zip Code Socials (social events for HTH Village School parents) and invitations to the spring Catwalk Cabaret (a social fundraising gala). Typically email is used to communicate with parents.

Dear Parents,

Welcome!

The High Tech High Parent Associations extend a warm "Welcome" to all our new and returning families. Each Parent Association (PA) Board has been busy over the summer organizing and preparing the enclosed packet to assist with the many questions you may have about our schools and the many ways in which you can get involved. Like you, we are simply parents with kids who have been among those fortunate enough to be able to attend such schools. We are on the sidelines and behind the scenes, promoting the usual fund raising ventures, such as E-scrip, but our crown and glory is our end of the year event known as CATWALK CABARET, which has raised over $170,000. in the past two years. As parents, we want to ensure the best possible educational experience for our students and your involvement and support is key to accomplishing this goal. We welcome your input and assistance whenever possible. Please make time to chat with us over coffee at morning drop off on the first day of school. We'll be set up on the commons in front of each school.

Five PA Boards - Independent, yet unified!

Our five PA's operate similarly - each with a separate, independent board of directors. However, we also cooperate and work as a unified "Village" in planning many events, activities and fundraisers. Each of the PA's Presidents and Vice-Presidents are members of a joint HTH Village "President's Council" that meets monthly to coordinate our efforts. Enclosed you will find a list of the Presidents' Council members and each of the PA board's Executive Committees. More About Catwalk Cabaret

Our annual PA-hosted Spring event is our Catwalk Cabaret Dinner and Auction, and it's not to be missed! This event is near and dear to our hearts and we change the theme yearly, so it's always a grand surprise when you enter the venue. As mentioned earlier, in the past two years this event has raised over $170,000 which has been distributed to help fund chemistry labs, robotics equipment, sports equipment, the Arts and Drama departments, Exploratory classes, Advisories, and much more. This stupendous soiree is not only successful, but it's a wonderful opportunity to dress up for a fantastic night out! (Just ask anyone who's attended) You will be hearing more about this event and how to join in the planning, in the coming months. Look to your weekly email notices for the date of the first meeting in October.

Just shop as usual, and eScrip contributes 2-10% of your purchases from participating grocery and retail stores to the school(s) of your choice.Here's how it works:

ENROLL / REGISTER your grocery/credit/debit cards, designating the school(s) of your choice.
SHOP - at your grocery and other participating stores or online, just as you usually do.
OUR SCHOOLS GET MONEY - retailers donate a percentage of your purchases to our school.

To Enroll and Register, please follow these easy instructions:

For Vons and other eScrip grocery stores, or to register your credit/debit cards for purchases made at other participating retail stores (such as Macy's, Office Max, etc.), or participating restaurants (see eScrip website for complete listing):

Go to "http://www.eScrip.com"
Click on "Sign on Now" to enroll or "My eScrip" to update your account to benefit HTH Village Schools.
Follow the instructions. You may register up to 3 schools to receive funds.

Note: Each year you will need to renew your Vons and Safeway cards by going to website, and clicking on "Yes! Renew".

For Albertsons / Sav-On - Preferred Savings Cards

Go to "http://www.albertsons.com" and enter site.
At bottom of page, click "In the Community".
On right side of page, click on "Community Partners" and log on as "Shopper", then follow registration directions.

Go to "http://www.ralphs.com" Click "Community Contribution" (right,bottom)
